I had the upper and lower gaskets done a year ago, they did the lower manifold as well, but reused the upper. The upper is leaking again and never really stopped smelling like oil, I had a shop confirm that it is leaking again and they want to replace the upper manifold and gaskets. I looked over how to do it and it seems pretty straightforward. Are there any pitfalls I should know about?

Don't drop a fucking nut.

If you do it is almost guaranteed to fall into the engine ports....

Is that one if those damn plastic manifold? If so, ditch it and either a) find an aluminum one out there, or b) fab one yourself or have someone else fab one for you. Not only would you likely gain a few hp, you even more likely wouldn't have that problem again.

Not hard to do. Sometimes the Egr gas eats through the plastic and you need to repair the hole that the tube sticks up through. But the UIM shouldnt have any oil - that would be coming from the LIM gaskets. Best bet is to do the LIM gaskets with the revised aluminum ones. Also get the aluminum coolant elbow to the alternator housing. The plastic one is sure to break while you are doing this. I've done a bunch of these. One 1200 miles from home without my tools!

Only problem is the aluminum ones also had a different throttle body, so you need a 3rd party adapter to use the OEM throttle body. They have a repair sleeve for the EGR tube hole - it's only major flaw.

Shop rags. Plug those ports up with a metric shit ton of shop rags. Always.

Yes one tool and nut/bolt/whatever at a time. The grinding before the stop might be pleasant.... or not.

Firm, secure grasps.
